In 2008 IonOptix Corporation, with Red Box Direct Ltd., formed IonOptix LLC in the US and IonOptix Limited in Europe as part of an expansion plan to grow our business and provide better local support to our customers. IonOptix's sarcomere spacing algorithm was used to record sarcomere shortening. Real-time sarcomere length recording was born from this effort and numerous other advances resulted including the development of the MyoPacer, a stand-alone field stimulator for myocytes in a microscope-mounted cell chamber.įurther developments in recent years include faster CCD cameras, the C-Pace system for preventing de-differentiation in cultured cells and advances in software control and analysis. In 1998 IonOptix Corporation received grant support from the NIH SBIR program for developing new instrumentation for cardiac contractility recording. Development of the software-based edge detection system was begun in 1995 and sales to the heart research community grew rapidly. Through this collaboration, a system was developed to simultaneously record the calcium level and the cell length of a single cardiac myocyte (obtained by digitizing the output of an analog edge detector). In these tests, the aircraft is sent down the runway at different speeds to test its own power and allow ground teams to monitor systems like steering, braking and anti-skid. Photo by Klein Vision via ABACAPRESS.COM Klein Vision/ABACA/Reutersįlying car cleared for takeoff, but you'll need a pilot's licenseĪ prototype of the aircraft, which debuted in 2019, has been going through low-speed taxi tests since December and will attempt a high-speed taxi test in the next few weeks. However, unlike the planes you're used to, AirCar is only capable of carrying 2 people with a combined weight of 31 stone. Unlike drone-taxis, AirCar is unable to take off or land vertically, and requires a runway - similar to a plane you take when you're off your holidays. AirCar has a fixed propeller at the back, as well as a ballistic parachute for any emergencies. When on the ground, the vehicle looks like a modern sports car, where the wings of the aircraft are folded smoothly down the side - it takes 2 minutes and 15 seconds to turn into an aircraft from sports car mode. The car has a BMW engine and even runs off petrol-pump fuel, but it takes much more than that for it to take flight into the air. Professor Stefan Klein described the experience as "very pleasant". The car/aircraft was operated by its inventor, Professor Stefan Klein and its co-founder, Anton Zajac. It's capable of flying about 600 miles at a height of 8,200ft (2,500m) and has completed over 40 hours of test flights. Handout photo - A new milestone has been hit for AirCar - a prototype car that can transform into an aircraft and has completed a successful 35-minute flight, and at the click of a button it transforms back into a car! The aircraft completed its test flight in Slovakia, from airports Nitra to Bratislava on 28 June, which makes the aircrafts 142nd successful landing. 4/26/2023 0 Comments Junk journal clipart collectionFirst, you will explore a common issue that hampers creativity and/or positive self-worth. You can terraform the land, not only doing regular worker stuff like making tile improvements and roads and stuff, you can also raise or lower terrain to form artificial mountains (which can alter the weather), plant or remove native plant life, create new rivers, new islands, all kinds of stuff. Same goes with your government, tech gives you different aspects of government and society that give various bonuses. New techs give you parts to build units with, not just new units, so all your units can be ones you designed yourself. It gives the most customization of all the civ games. It'll be a shame if we have to wait that long again.SMAC is one of my favorite games of all time, and it's certainly my favorite civ, so I might be a little biased towards it. We waited nearly two decades for a spiritual successor to Alpha Centauri. And if you play on smaller maps, you can avoid some of that endgame slog.īut it's too bad this couldn't have been a grander, bolder break from a game system we've been saddled with since 2010. It's the best this approach to a Civilization game is going to get. If you missed Civilization V, Beyond Earth is probably going to seem fresh and maybe even exciting. But in the end it's just decision-grinding-shoving a vast wheel up a mountain, an inch at a time. The game tries to jazz things up by asking you to weigh in on decision forks that grant trifling bonuses, and the new Virtue system adds another bonus-granting layer that rolls out selectable strength or growth or scientific perks as your influence grows. Instead of cracking this aspect of the game open, the Cover Ops section in which you can enact subterfuge against other cities feels like busywork after the first few run-throughs, just reassigning agents to do the same things (with hip new names) that they've been doing in this series forever.īut it's the long game that brings Beyond Earth crashing back to earth: Eventually, you're just banging the "next turn" button, letting the game's automated systems execute, watching the factional "processing turn" counters flip, waiting for something interesting to happen. There's just no time between the alien corralling game or the terraforming one to care much about what the colonist A.I.'s up to. On the other hand, unless you're aggressively expansionist, your interactions with other factions tend to be either feckless banter or same-ol' horse trading (diplomacy's as dull as ever, a menu of conversational levers that give little sense of the gears they're moving). During this phase, you're still poring over the map like it's an interesting place to be. Every two or three hexes there's a mess in need of cleanup or a threat that demands tackling. Canyons and mountains frame logjams of alien nests defended by hyper-vigilant squads of alien wolf beetles, raptor bugs, manticores and drones. Miasma-saturated hexes sap unit health and take a lot of work to either clear up or figure out how to exploit. It's here the game feels the least like Civilization V, more so because you're having to jockey your explorers and workers and soldiers around in a topographical straightjacket. Attack them, and you're batting a karmic hornet's nest that over time can bring the planet's collective xenomorphs (mostly bug-like, with the odd Dune worm or space-kraken tossed in) crashing down on you like an extraterrestrial hammer. Ignore them and they'll swarm and block your growth and inevitably attack. Instead of fending off anemic barbarian tribes, you're sharing turf with minor armies of natives. It's the early game, where they're just distant dots on the map, that is as close as Beyond Earth gets to riveting. still culture.ĭepending how you play, of course, the other factions matter less than the aliens. Other key variables just swap names: gold is now "energy," happiness is now "health," and culture is. Most of *Civilization V'*s initial shortcomings (like its abysmal A.I.) were finessed in its expansions, and Beyond Earth picks up a few of their better improvements, including trade routes and espionage. Developer Firaxis tilled interstellar ground once before with Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri in 1996, a riff on Civilization II that picked up where that game ended: Reach for the stars, colonize a hostile planet, integrate (or exploit) the indigenous lifeforms and fool with metaphysical gobbledygook like "sentient econometrics," "transcendent thought" and "the singularity" distilled down to abilities and modifiers that helped sculpt your passive-aggressive tromp toward victory.īeyond Earth plays the same cards, but flaunts *Civilization V'*s DNA, which means bigger cities, slower build queues (to mitigate sprawl, since units can't stack) and maneuvering across hexes instead of orthogonal grids.
4/25/2023 0 Comments Dreamfall chapters episode 1An example for this is a scene, in which a character known to Zoe is threatened by some thugs and if the player walks towards them, he has made the choice to intervene. What I mean by that, is that often the already mentioned “x will remember y” message pops up at the top of the screen, when I didn’t even realize that my actions would be counted as a choice. I’m a little bit torn about “decisions” in games like this, because they too often either offer little difference and/or it’s not possible to make an informed decision on what to choose, given the way such options are usually presented. The story seems alright so far, it certainly offers a nice re-entry into the world of Dreamfall (they managed to keep the tone of the previous game surprisingly well and I liked a lot how it continues exactly where the story stopped) and I don’t think it’s possible to say a lot more about it, after only experiencing 1/5 of it. That’s not necessarily something to hold against Chapters, but it sometimes seems like they played Telltale games like TWD a little bit too much, when the game starts stating info of the type “x will remember y”, but that’s still easy to forgive, I mean the Telltale stuff sells after all… The game creates a mood that really agrees with me and so far it looks like the combat encounters from Dreamfall are nothing but a bad memory. The graphics, the music… all a lot better than I expected it to be. I must admit I was really impressed by this game. I didn’t replay/rewatch The Longest Journey (I wish that game would be remade like Monkey Island 2), because considering how April Ryan was sidelined and ultimately removed, its story seemed no longer relevant to what’s going on now in Chapters (except for the rubber ducky still being at large). I could have replayed it myself, but… At least this way I got to skip all these tedious combat sequences, which were the sole bad thing about it. That seemed like a good idea, given how long it had been. In preparation for Dreamfall Chapters, I rewatched Dreamfall. 4/25/2023 0 Comments Timenet group inc.The ZIP file includes a detailed setup manual for the installation of the software, so don’t worry about configuration issues. This is required to be installed on all computers to allow them to sync with the TIMENET NTP Server. Once this was done we went on a separate computer and downloaded the TIMENET Pro Service for Windows software ZIP file. All of these are fairly easy for anyone to work through and nothing jumped out at us as being difficult. There are three menu tabs that allow you to see the status of the satellite connections, perform administrative changes and view the TIMENET system settings. Once connected, we entered the device menu and made the necessary IP changes to correspond to our mini-network. We first had to set up the TIMENET Pro Master for use on our test network this was easy using the default IP address of 192.168.42.7. For our testing we just placed the antenna on a window sill and it worked just fine. The antenna, being as small as it is, is quite unobtrusive and can easily be mounted in a location that will not bother anyone. We set up a small eight-port PoE switch for testing and added two laptops to serve as “video servers” on our closed test network. The supplied Quick Setup Guide walks you through the process of initially connecting the unit to the network to be serviced. The product has a fairly straightforward setup to get the unit online and operational. Its three connections are an RJ-45 jack for net-work and PoE connectivity, two-pin auxiliary power connector and gold-plated SMA coaxial connector. The housing is constructed from aluminum and has a solid feel. The time server is smaller than the size of a deck of playing cards. It is also useful in locations where there is no Internet service, such as remote monitoring stations or mobile applications like mass transit operations. This is especially useful for secured networks that require time synchronization and don’t want to risk being exposed to the “outside world” Internet. The time server is really designed to do one thing for you - provide a satellite-based time and date input that allows you to synchronize all computers and other electronic components to the Atomic Clock. Veracity also provides a mounting kit for the antenna, which includes an alcohol prep pad to clean the mounting surface and a double-sided foam mounting strip. The antenna is quite small (1-inch square) and resembles an aftermarket satellite radio antenna. The unit is also supplied with a separate antenna that has an approximately 20-foot-long cable attached. There are also two small aluminum clips that attach to each side and allow the unit to be surface mounted with screws. There are three connections to the device: a standard RJ-45 jack that allows the unit to connect to the local network (and get power via a PoE connection), a two-pin auxiliary power connector (if PoE is not used), and a gold-plated SMA coaxial connector. The housing is constructed from aluminum and has a solid feel to the casing. The TIMENET Pro Master NTP time server is actually a very small device, just slightly smaller than a deck of playing cards. The manufacturer has become the OEM provider for a major IP video surveillance manufacturer that is extremely picky in terms of product quality, which bodes well for Veracity wares’ reliability. Since that time it appears Veracity has improved the quality of its products. We were initially reluctant to review a Veracity product while we have worked with the company’s products in the past (most notably coaxial-to-Ethernet media converters at various customer sites), our history with these media converters was not good, having several go offline repeatedly. The TIMENET Pro Master NTP time server we tested allows an integrator or end user to synchronize the time and date on all computers in their network without having to expose their system to outside Internet sources. We decided to put it to the test and see just how easy (or hard) it is to set up a master time server for closed-loop networks. We saw the Veracity TIMENET Pro Master NTP time server at ISC West and, on paper, it seemed to fit the bill for our application. A casino project led us to look at time servers - as you may know, casino surveillance systems need synchronized time for all servers but are often prohibited by regulators from communicating with the outside world via the Internet. Sometimes we run into fairly niche problem-solver products in the course of planning our reviews. 4/25/2023 0 Comments Bubble trouble aj chestFor patients with prior hypercapnic failure (requiring non-invasive ventilation or intermittent positive pressure ventilation) who do not have an alert card, it is recommended that treatment should be commenced using a 28% Venturi mask at 4 l/min in prehospital care or a 24% Venturi mask at 2–4 l/min in hospital settings with an initial target saturation of 88–92% pending urgent blood gas results. In these cases it is recommended that treatment should be based on the results of previous blood gas estimations during acute exacerbations because hypercapnic respiratory failure can occur even if the saturation is below 88%. Some patients with COPD and other conditions are vulnerable to repeated episodes of hypercapnic respiratory failure. įor most patients with known chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or other known risk factors for hypercapnic respiratory failure (eg, morbid obesity, chest wall deformities or neuromuscular disorders), a target saturation range of 88–92% is suggested pending the availability of blood gas results. Most non-hypoxaemic breathless patients do not benefit from oxygen therapy, but a sudden reduction of more than 3% in a patient’s oxygen saturation within the target saturation range should prompt fuller assessment of the patient (and the oximeter signal) because this may be the first evidence of an acute illness. Some normal subjects, especially people aged >70 years, may have oxygen saturation measurements below 94% and do not require oxygen therapy when clinically stable. The recommended target saturation range for acutely ill patients not at risk of hypercapnic respiratory failure is 94–98%. This guideline recommends aiming to achieve a normal or near-normal oxygen saturation for all acutely ill patients apart from those at risk of hypercapnic respiratory failure. SUMMARY OF KEY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR EMERGENCY OXYGEN USE Achieving desirable oxygen saturation ranges in acute illness (sections 6.7 and 6.8) Pulse oximetry must be available in all locations where emergency oxygen is used.Īll critically ill patients should be assessed and monitored using a recognised physiological track and trigger system. (The other vital signs are pulse, blood pressure, temperature and respiratory rate). Oxygen saturation, “the fifth vital sign”, should be checked by pulse oximetry in all breathless and acutely ill patients (supplemented by blood gases when necessary) and the inspired oxygen concentration should be recorded on the observation chart with the oximetry result. The guideline suggests aiming to achieve normal or near-normal oxygen saturation for all acutely ill patients apart from those at risk of hypercapnic respiratory failure or those receiving terminal palliative care.įor critically ill patients, high concentration oxygen should be administered immediately ( table 1 and fig 1) and this should be recorded afterwards in the patient’s health record. The essence of this guideline can be summarised simply as a requirement for oxygen to be prescribed according to a target saturation range and for those who administer oxygen therapy to monitor the patient and keep within the target saturation range. (Oxygen has not been shown to have any effect on the sensation of breathlessness in non-hypoxaemic patients.) Oxygen is a treatment for hypoxaemia, not breathlessness.
